Devoted to Prayer

Scripture: Colossians 4:2

Scripture Memory:  Psalm 55:16-17

As for me, I call to God,
   and the LORD saves me.
Evening, morning and noon
   I cry out in distress,
   and he hears my voice.

Journey: Chances are that many of us will “yawn” when we read the title of this morning’s sermon. It almost sounds mundane. Honestly, what provokes more immediate excitement and a greater sense of anticipation, “How to Have Great Sex” “5 Principles for Absolute Financial Freedom” or “Devoted to Prayer”?

Maybe the title should be “Face to Face with an Awesome God.” That is more to the point anyway. When I weigh the experiences of my life (and there have been quite a few that have really caused my heart to redline) I don’t think there is anything I could compare to standing face to face with God Almighty, speaking with Him and Him speaking to Me.

When I think about it that way, maybe there’s really nothing mundane about the title “Devoted to Prayer.” Perhaps what is mundane and ordinary is our understanding of and personal experience of God which causes us to read the title “Devoted to Prayer” so sleepily. What do you think?

Hoping to chase the good things in life with you,

A Promise of Life

Scripture: Colossians 3:20-21; Ephesians 6:1-4

Scripture Memory:  Psalm 9:1-2

1 I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
2 I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.

Journey: The relationships between children and parents can often be as demanding and as difficult as the relationship between husbands and wives. Of course, those relationships are also a great source of blessing in life but in order for that to be true there needs to be wisdom, love and grace in a family. Today in our Journey in the Word we will be hoping to set clear (1) why children should obey and honor their parents and (2) how parents (especially fathers) can take their role as “disciple makers” seriously.

Hoping for our homes to grow in goodness,

Marriage by God’s Design (Submission, Headship, Love and Respect)

Scripture: Ephesians 5:21-33

Scripture Memory:  Psalm 1:1-3

1 Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
      or stand around with sinners,
      or join in with mockers.
2 But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.
3 They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
      bearing fruit each season.
   Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

Journey: Today is our last day (really, it is!) of focusing on the theme of marriage and we’re returning to  Ephesians 5 to carefully consider the difficult but critical subjects of submission and Christ-like love in the context of marriage.

One Statement and Two Questions: If we named the title of today’s message “Radically Submissive Wives, Loving Husbands, Happy Homes” we would be very close to summarizing what the Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 5 about marriage. How does that make you feel? Why?

Glad to pursue His blessing on our marriages with you,

Marriage by God’s Design (Submission, Headship, Love and Respect)

Scripture: Ephesians 5:21-33

Scripture Memory:  Mark:34-35

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.”

Keys to A Great Marriage (Questions About Divorce and Remarriage)

Scripture: Matthew 5:31-32
Scripture Memory:  Matthew 28:18-20
“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Journey: We’ve been talking about marriage for a few weeks now and we’ll stick with it just two more Sundays. This Sunday we’ll focus on questions related to divorce and remarriage and next Sunday we’ll look one last time at Ephesians 5 to carefully consider the words of positive encouragement for those who are married.
Praying for you!
